When you feel comfortable, you can begin speaking with (and submitting writing to) LiveMocha tutors. I am empathetic about being a "self-conscious perfectionist" as I used to be one myself. The only way out is to realize, 1) there is no such thing as perfection in a language (For starters, who decides what is perfect? Even native speakers confuse the meanings of words and have a hard time expressing themselves when they are angry, tired, nervous or stressed out), and 2) not define your self-worth based on your abilities in a foreign language. (Not being able to communicate well in a foreign tongue does not mean you are stupid, it just means "you aren't used to it yet" as Khatzumoto of All Japanese All the Time so eloquently puts it... Just keep you chin up and enjoy the ride!) The answer is simple: just use LiveMocha for input, not output until you're ready. By: Reader http://l2mastery.com/featured-articles/review-of-livemocha-the-worlds-largest-language-learning-community/comment-page-1#comment-2278 Reader Fri, 10 Sep 2010 16:40:12 +0000 http://l2mastery.com/?p=1122#comment-2278 I realize that this post is a few months old, but John, if you're still following, I have a question regarding this statement you made: " The good news is that all of the following problems can be overcome or side-stepped based on how you use LiveMocha. " How can one work around the early speaking and writing output expectations on Livemocha? I've joined the Livemocha community but I haven't enrolled in any courses yet. I'm a very self-conscious perfectionist, and my "affective filter" is one of my biggest obstacles when it comes to new pursuits.
