Steve definitely knows his stuff and I’ve really enjoyed my conversations with him over the past few years. You are quite right that the Mandarin sounds xue, xie, zhi, chu, re, and ri can prove challenging for learners of the language, but I think Steve’s point was that (aside from those just mentioned) the language presents few new sounds for native speakers of English. Native speakers of Japanese, for example, have a far more formidable task when learning English or Mandarin considering how few sounds they have to draw on in their native tongue.

His emphasis on the importance of having interesting learning material is spot on as is his comment about the teacher’s job being to fire up the students so that they will go away and learn the material themselves. I am not sure about his comment that the sounds of Mandarin are easy. For example the sounds ” xue, xie, zhi, chu,re,ri” are seldom pronounced well by foreigners. Perhaps he means that a foreigner can approximate these sounds and that’s all that is required. Anyway a very good interview of a very accomplished linguist.
