Much of a language is indeed arbitrary, which is why trying to learn a language by memorizing rules isn’t very effective. It’s much better to get lots of exposure and practice using the language in meaningful contexts. And yes, even being a native speaker of a language doesn’t mean one will be perfect in that language. I am a 35-year-old native English speaker and still learn new English words all the time.

Honestly, I won’t say I master Vietnamese language even though I am a Vietnamese born and bred. So, I really admire you for giving a it try.
