I’d also recommend adding in some one-on-one tutoring through iTalki or the like, downloading some podcasts, getting some manga, etc.

I started learning Mandarin this year and I would like to learn Japanese in the future, too. I have been using Memrise to practice reading and writing, but it’s a struggle. I had used Lang-8 in the past, but I stopped using it (I’m not really sure why). I definitely want to give it another go now after reading your post. I’m also going to check out iKnow!
